Sandra Bertrand is a California native who has considered New York City her adopted home for over fifty years. Her paintings, both expressionistic landscapes and portraits, have been inspired by her many travels and her explorations as a writer for the arts and the world at large.
Her approach to the canvas has been one of immediacy, often using her photography as a springboard to capture the decisive moment. In her portraits such as her Strong Women series, she aims for the inner truth of the subject rather than a naturalistic interpretation. She has been a proud member of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) since 2014 and has been a regular contributor of their Annual Exhibitions at One Arts Space in Chelsea and many others, such as NAWA’s RENAISSANCE WOMEN (5 NYC Libraries, a Blanch Hooker Rockefeller Grant to NAWA) and most recently Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories at the Vanda Gallery in New Rochelle (2024).
Highlight group exhibits include FAR + WIDE National Exhibition, Woodstock Art Association and Museum 2018, Main Gallery, Curator Daniel Belasco, Ex. Director, Al Held Foundation; Summer 2020 Juried Exhibition, Blue Mountain Gallery, NYC Martica Sawin, Juror; Gramercy Arts Association Annual. SOLO Exhibits: The Hudson River Valley LGBTQ Community Center, Kingston, NY and SETI Gallery, Kent Connecticut, Grand Opening Exhibition, 2013.
Sandra is a member of The Art Students League of New York (2013 to Present). She is Travel, Arts and Cultural Editor for Sanctuary Magazine and Chief Arts Critic for Highbrow Magazine. Her plays have been seen off-off B’way and at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference.
