Susan Conrad was born in Binghamton, NY where her connection to art, music and nature first began. She spent her childhood always doing something creative, from drawing to macramé to creating her own dollhouse.

As a young adult, she jumped at the chance to move to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, earning a degree in Illustration. Entering the world of graphic design, she created works for Polygram and Chrysalis Records before becoming a freelance graphic designer for Noise International, where her work appeared in Billboard Magazine. Susan’s Graphic design experience lead her to a career in publishing that included such prominent magazines as Martha Stewart Living, PC Magazine and Departures Magazine.

Rediscovering painting, she began to take landscape-painting trips to such places as Amagansett NY, Provincetown MA and eventually New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. Susan studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League and floral design at Parsons School of Design. Her love of art kept tapping her on the shoulder and in 2003 she left publishing to attend the School of Visual Arts and devote herself to her art full time. She graduated in 2005 with a BFA.

Recently Susan’s painting has evolved into a more personal expression. She uses life events, emotions and story to produce inter

nal landscapes that are joyful and disturbing, colorful and dark. Her art conveys transformation out of pain, isolation and fear into freedom, connectedness and hope. These diametrically opposing elements frequently occur simultaneously. Optimistic bright, happy colors and shiny metallics mix with uncontrolled, mysterious black or dark imagery. They dance the dance. Without dark there can be no light. This interesting juxtaposition embodies the spiritual journey.

Currently Susan lives and works in New York City.
